Although it may not seem serious at first glance, this type of abuse is becoming very common. Knowing how to properly manage your privacy settings on social media sites can be useful to avoid harassment and problems with employers or schools. One of the easiest ways to avoid issues is to not post any information that you wouldn’t want someone else to see. If you don’t want family members to see certain posts, then don’t tag them. You can put your Twitter account on private so people can only follow you and cannot see your tweets unless they are following you. If you do not feel safe posting pictures, then do not post any pictures because it does not matter if the picture is blurred or doesn’t show your face. It just takes one individual to recognize that picture and it could lead to a cyberstalking situation or worse yet, physical stalking. It is still possible to keep your photos private even if you post them on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram. If you are afraid that pictures of you might end up online, then it is recommended that all pictures be transferred to a personal computer where they are not visible to the public. If employers are concerned about what an employee posts online, then they can deny hiring or fire someone on the grounds of breaking company policies. Some companies may have social media policies stating that employees cannot post on their own sites while at work. If this happens, this can lead to termination of the employee based on their violation of company policy.
